On Saturday night, February 6th DYSMD hit the field to check out the scene at MayStar’s Fashion Whore’s 80’s Aerobic theme party. The event was a success which featured independent designers on the runway along with a dance party all under one roof.
We arrived in San Diego’s Hillcrest community easily finding parking and entering The Ruby Room. The closer we reached the entry doors it became quite obvious the night would be filled with artist and like minds. Upon entering the doors the warm energy of people socializing embraced the lightly red dimmed venue as guest of all colorful personalities and fashionable taste seeked out excitement of reunion. The 1980’s television boxes and big screen TV’s added to the evening 80’s work out gear theme. As we continued we were consumed by the stimulating décor that accompanied the artistic ensembles of people’s outfits.
The night was filled with activity and expression. In some places you would find a hosted live photo shoot, display of fashionable accessories and the runway. Our excitement solidified that this was not just any other event. This was to be a special night and a night of fashion galore. The Fashion Whore!
As the clocked approached 11 the main event was to begin. The showcase on the runway sounded off as the dj pumped up the crowd and began to introduce the first of the three designers. One by one the models elegantly took stride up and down the runway against the background of a burgandy velvet curtains. The stage was as elegant as the models themselves.
The designers showcased this particular night…
Makeshift Apparel
As Makeshift Apparel's first 5 models made their way thru the runway I noticed this designer was going for a much more edgier, rock-ish look with variations of screen-printed shirts. Many of their designs featured very girly inspired dresses. Although, they even had men's wear. I really like that fact that they had a little bit of everything, which made this line so diverse. This designer was not afraid to go from casual wear one minute, to nightwear. The one outfit that did get my attention from this line was those gold pants!!
Zeplo Designs
Zeplo Designs had much creativity going on from yellows to blues and pinks with short ensembles to long ones. She combined various ideas in one outfit; using velvet material with bows and lace. It was too much for my taste, but you know there are always people who love to purchase those extreme outfits and make them work. Some of Zeplo's designs reminded me of a spin off to snow white's dress. Zeplo art.
Molly B Bikinis
Last, but not least, Molly B Bikinis used much color as well, but this time they were meshed to compliment and it goes well. I really could see myself wearing some of these bikinis out this summer. She used fun patterns such as flowers and my favorite: bows. Molly B Bikinis creations were a pleasure to see. This designer really knows what she's doing and is going somewhere with her inspiring designs. Nicely done!
If you like unique fashion with a twist of artistic dare go to MayStar's Fashion Whore Dance Party. This affair brings you all the best of an electrical indie night out. Listening to the likes of “Thieves Like Us”, “MGMT” and occasionally hearing your favorite 80's tune. Maystar brings San Diegans into her world and is spearheading this little indie industry with her vision of fashion and culture being mixed with music and art. This event is not to be overlooked.
