| Hello my friends. It is very nice to see you again. I know it has been a little while since we last spoke, but I need to tell you about one of my favorite locations in downtown San Diego. Yes, you guessed it … Little Italy. No surprise there, right? We will take a short trip together that I like to call “Tour Di Italia.”
I do admit to you, that Little Italy in San Diego is not quite “Italy,” but there is one location in particular that makes you feel like you are at least close to Italy, or the “old Italian neighborhood” in New York, and it is called Mona Lisa’s Italian Foods. It is located directly off of India Street in the heart of Little Italy. Mona Lisa’s also has a sit down restaurant directly next door. It is a part of the establishment as well.
Do you like sandwiches? How about Italian style sandwiches? They are my favorite, and if you have not tried something other than turkey and cheese or peanut butter and jelly, believe me, you will soon. Mona Lisa’s has many fresh, Italian deli style sandwiches. There is one in particular that I wanted to point out to you today. Have you ever heard of “Caprese?” Caprese always consists of a fresh tomato slice, topped with a fresh Mozzarella ball, fresh basil leaf, or leaves, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. Now picture this inside of a fresh Italian sandwich roll … WOW!! It is simply to die for. Well, not literally, but you get my point.
The ingredients are amazingly fresh, and I truly thought I was visiting the Bronx, New York again, where my family is originally from. The sandwich roll has just the right chew, and the combination of the fresh “Caprese” ingredients is so savory that I think I will make this stop at least once a week. I hope to see you there. Trust me, it is worth the trip. Look for me in the “Italian” neighborhood my friends. Until next time, “Stay hungry my friends” … “Mange” (EAT) … Ciao!!
