DJ Theron, with his unique mixing ability and down to earth personality has been winning over San Diegans for years, and has earned awards and accolades from both Eventvibe and 944 magazine. While most would think that these awards come from hard work and promoting, if you asked him why he thinks he won, his tongue in cheek answer would be, “Well, because I look so good.”
While such comments might lead you to believe otherwise, Theron is actually incredibly laid back and surprisingly self-conscious. Honest about his own struggles with being a perfectionist, and consciously striving to project an open, welcoming aura.
“I try not to be too ‘DJ-esque,’” says Theron with a hint of a regional Hawaiian accent. “I try to be approachable; I’ll come over and say hello, do a shot, whatever. I don’t want to be stuck up.”
Beyond his club and deejay persona, Theron seems to be shy and slightly introverted. Considering Downtown, with its occasional air of over-stuffed self-confidence and significance, his downplayed take on himself and the lifestyle he leads is refreshing. He explains that while he truly is the outgoing, funny, crazy guy behind the turntables, he is also his own worst critic in his downtime. Perhaps it is this inner dichotomy that serves as inspiration for the rock/hip hop/house mash ups he spins.
Coming to San Diego from the Aloha State as a school student years ago, then staying on post-graduation for the “kick back, don’t have to grow up” mentality that San Diego breeds, Theron transitioned from his punk rock roots to electronic music simply because it was something different. Now of course, the sound that he’s most famous for brings together both of those musical elements, and links hip-hop, rock, punk and house in a unique way that gets the club crowd moving every time.
Since joining up with Jason Herrick, one of his business partners in Fortune Music and platonic soulmate, Theron has been progressing with his deejaying and producing projects. As Fortune Music, Theron and Herrick - together with their other partner, DJ G* Roy - have been working on remixes with Donald Glaude and Charles Feelgood. Last year they experienced success producing a number one vinyl track, ‘Masterblaster’, for dancerecords.com. Now that deejays are trending towards digital recordings, they have music on iTunes and beatport.com as well.
In addition to everything Theron and Fortune Music have been doing in the studio, be sure to catch one of Theron and G*Roy’s weekly live sets at Confidential on Thursdays, or see Theron rockin’ it solo at Basic on Saturdays. Also, if you’re able to make it out to North County on September 16 th, stop by to hang out with Theron and the rest of the Fortune family at the Del Mar Marriott from noon to 8pm. |
